Just a quick note to say there will be a slightly enforced break in the blog for a week or so. I have injured my left hand and there is a limit as to how long I can type with one hand….back soon.
So here we are at the end of another week and it is time to take a look back at what I have watched over the last 7 days. It has been a bit of a disappointing week with only one trip to the cinema and that was a re-watch. I can sum the reason for this in one simple world: Olympics. Here in Australia we are slightly hampered by the time difference back to old Blightly, so most evenings I have been glued to Channel 9 watching and cheering Team GB towards yet another gold. Even made me feel a little homesick.
I had much higher hopes in last week’s Looking Ahead in which I had hoped to watch Cosmopolis, Jackpot, Take This Waltz, The Weekend and make start on The Story of Film. A pretty poor return this week with only Take This Waltz ticked off (again) and a token start of the Story of Film.
So what did I watch? Here is the tale of the tape for the last week. As always you can check out my full 2012 watch list here:-
Take This Waltz – Rewatch of this impressive drama starring Michelle Williams, Seth Rogan and Luke Kirby. This is not going to get old any time soon. Highly Recommended.
Thank You For Smoking – Aaron Eckhart stars in this satirical look at the Big Tobacco publicity machine. There are two main standouts here, firstly Aaron Eckhart who puts in a witty and charismatic performance, and secondly Jason Reitman’s (who also Directs) consistently clever and compelling script. These combine for a hugely enjoyable couple of hours. Highly Recommended.
Exit Through The Gift Shop – Banksy’s first foray into art on screen. I wasn’t entirely sure what to make of this, I thought it was going to be more a documentary on Banksy himself, rather than a documentary about somebody else trying to make a documentary on him. Did that make sense? It is worth a watch though, but I have my doubts on the authenticity of it all. Mr Brainwash in particular just seems a little too stupid. Watch It.
Kill Bill Vol. 1 – I think this may have been my first rewatch of Tarantino’s tale of a Bride scorned and it stands up a lot better than I expected. I had hoped to watch both volumes in one sitting, but I never quite made it. I know very little about 70s Kung Fu movies of which this is homage, but it made me want to watch a few. Vol. 2 next week. Watch It.
The Story of Film – Only an hour in, but really interesting. I think this is going to be a real education.
Olympics – What can I say, it just gets better and better. Has anyone else found themselves sitting captivated and watching a sport they had never really cared for before? For me I got hooked on the archery at Lords Cricket Ground. Gave me a new appreciated for The Hunger Games.
Breaking Bad – Finally got to the end of Season Three but now I feel like I am going through cold turkey. Need to get season 4 soon. Do you have any?
