What is it with the military and moustaches?

I first came across Killer Elite whilst scrolling through the rental screen on iTunes looking for something to fill a couple of hours with.  The reviews talked about ‘a thinking man’s action film’ inspired by “The Feather Men” a book by British legend Ranulph Fiennes.  The cast also included Jason Statham, Clive Owen and none other than Robert De Niro.  It was a tempting package so I excitedly clicked on rent now.  10 minutes later I knew I had made quite a big mistake, but by then it was too late to ask for my money back.

Jack Reacher

About two years ago I was introduced to the Jack Reacher novels.  They are all essentially the same, telling the story of a 6 foot 6 inch, 200+ pound, ex-Military Policeman trying to work his way back into society. They are good fun to read and perfectly suited to be turned into a movie franchise.  That is until Tom Cruise was cast as Jack Reacher.  Ok, I am not going to rehash the endless internet rants about how Cruise is not quite the physical embodiment of Reacher, as the main attribute that Reacher has is his presence, and Tom Cruise can do screen presence well; so maybe he would be a good fit?

However, the first trailer has now arrived and it’s not looking good.  Cruise simply doesn’t have the swagger, the presence or indeed the menace that is needed.  At one point in the trailer Cruise is surrounded by a group of bad guys and he looks at them all and says ‘remember, you asked for this’.  It just doesn’t work; he comes across as slightly laughable, a bi like an extension of the Mission Impossible character, which is well, too refined for Reacher.  But hey ho, this is only the first trailer and a teaser one at that, so we shouldn’t really judge untill the final product is out.

What I would’t have given though for Jason Statham to have been in the lead role.  Now that is Reacher.

Here’s the trailer.  What do you think?
